How to make a Goshala?

  • Location: away from vehicular regions, crowds etc. As natural as possible. There should be no barbed wire fencing anywhere in the barn or grazing area. Wooden fencing is to be used.
  • Simple shed out of bamboo and walls out of bamboo canes and a roof.
  • Goshala to be made according to climatic condition. In Hot areas with less rain fall, half roof and half open preferred. Other wise the roof has to be leak proof and good storm protection to be provided.
  • Flooring: ideally has to be soft, non cemented or non-stone. Ideally made from mud and sand. But it gets wet, so then a layer of dry earth is added. Gradually after few months this mud floor (mixed with cowdung and urine) is removed and used in agriculture field. If Cemented floor present, it is stacked with straw on top, which is replaced regularly. Rubber floor is another alternative, durable though costly.
  • Cows always to have access to fresh water, may be a pond or big pot with water to be present in the goshala. One tank for water storage is good, as lot of water in required for cleaning etc.
